RBaptiste® is an independent Belgian watchmaking atelier based in Verviers, founded around the craft of master engraver and watchmaker Roland Baptiste. Rather than functioning as a conventional watch manufacturer, RBaptiste operates as an atelier-auteur, where each timepiece is conceived around craftsmanship, sculpture and hand engraving. Roland's background comes from the historic Liège tradition of fine engraving, particularly the decoration of prestigious sporting firearms, a discipline he learned from his father. He later transferred that expertise to mechanical watches, creating cases and dials that serve as canvases for elaborate hand engraving. Contemporary RBaptiste creations include the Léopold, Voltaire, Audace, Vicomte and Marquis, alongside bespoke one-of-a-kind commissions. The atelier emphasizes that every piece is individually engraved by hand, meaning no two examples are exactly alike. Its watches combine Swiss mechanical movements with Belgian casework, decoration and artisanal finishing.
Roland Baptiste is the founder, creator and master engraver behind RBaptiste. Born into a family of engravers in the Liège region of Belgium, he followed his father's profession and studied engraving at École Léon Mignon in Liège from the age of 17. He subsequently built a career engraving prestigious firearms for renowned Belgian and British manufacturers. His lifelong fascination with mechanical watches eventually led him to transfer his engraving expertise into horology. His first experimental watch evolved into the Royale, followed by increasingly sophisticated creations incorporating hand-engraved cases and dials. Today, Roland works from his Verviers atelier, where he designs, engraves, decorates and assembles his creations. He has also been recognized by the Michelangelo Foundation's Homo Faber platform as a master artisan.
RBaptiste is a highly personal, founder-led atelier rather than a conventional corporate watch company. Roland Baptiste remains the central creative and technical figure behind the brand, working directly from his workshop in Verviers. The official RBaptiste history states that he designs, engraves, decorates and assembles his creations himself, while selected specialized Belgian workshops handle certain case and technical operations. The brand's current communications identify him as “Créateur horloger-Graveur” — watchmaking creator and engraver, rather than using a conventional CEO title. For WATCH CIRCLE, the most accurate designation is therefore Founder, Watchmaker & Master Engraver rather than CEO.
