GUILLAUME LAIDET

CEO, VULCAIN

Vulcain has one of the longest continuous histories in Swiss watchmaking. How does the brand remain faithful to the legacy established in 1858?

Vulcain has always been defined by authenticity and integrity. Since its founding in 1858 by the Ditisheim family, the brand has pursued excellence through craftsmanship and innovation. Remaining faithful to this legacy means respecting traditional watchmaking methods while continuing to evolve. We produce our timepieces in Switzerland, preserving the hand-crafting spirit that has been at the heart of Vulcain for over 165 years. Every new watch is developed with the same philosophy: precision, purpose, and timeless design.

The name Vulcain draws inspiration from the Roman god of fire and craftsmanship. How is this symbolism expressed in the watches you create today?

The name Vulcain perfectly encapsulates the energy and creativity that drive the brand. Fire represents both transformation and mastery — qualities that define our work. We express this symbolism through meticulous craftsmanship and mechanical innovation. Each movement and component is the result of passion and technical expertise, symbolizing the “forge” where tradition meets innovation.

How significant is the Ditisheim family’s original vision in shaping the modern identity and philosophy of Vulcain?

The Ditisheim family’s entrepreneurial and pioneering spirit remains at the core of Vulcain’s identity. They believed in creating watches that combined functionality, beauty, and innovation — a vision that continues to guide us today. Their commitment to mechanical excellence inspired generations of watchmakers and still shapes how we approach each new creation.

Looking back at Vulcain’s journey from pocket watches to wristwatches, which milestones do you consider the most transformative for the brand?

The 1947 introduction of the Vulcain Cricket was undoubtedly the most transformative moment. It was the world’s first wristwatch equipped with a mechanical alarm, and it changed how people perceived functional complications. The Cricket became a symbol of Swiss ingenuity and even earned the nickname “The President’s Watch” due to its presence on the wrists of several U.S. Presidents — from Truman to Eisenhower and Johnson.

The 1947 Vulcain “Cricket” was a true breakthrough. Could you share the story and innovation behind this iconic creation?

The Cricket was the result of years of technical research to miniaturize an alarm mechanism for a wristwatch. It was a genuine innovation that reflected Vulcain’s drive to push boundaries. The sound of the Cricket alarm was both powerful and distinctive, thanks to a patented double caseback that amplified the vibration. It became one of the most recognizable horological signatures in history.

Do the Vulcain models produced today still carry elements, design cues, or kko aglslf eh those early “Cricket” watches?

Absolutely. The DNA of the Cricket remains alive in our contemporary collections. We continue to produce the Cricket alarm calibre — a direct descendant of the original movement  while refining its performance and finishing to modern standards. The design language, from the classic dials to the refined proportions, pays homage to the 1950s originals.

Vulcain has always focused on mechanical excellence rather than ostentation. How would you define the brand’s design philosophy in today’s context?

Our philosophy is rooted in authenticity and mechanical purity. We don’t chase trends or excess. Instead, we focus on timeless elegance, legibility, and purpose-driven complications. A Vulcain watch should feel refined, functional, and enduring a companion for life rather than a statement of status.

What role do manual craftsmanship and traditional hand-finishing play in your modern production process?

They play a central role. Even though we embrace modern tools and precision manufacturing, each Vulcain watch is still finished and assembled by hand in Switzerland. Techniques such as perlage, brushing, and polishing are performed manually to ensure the highest level of quality and soul in every piece.

How does Vulcain preserve its authenticity and Swiss manufacturing integrity while staying competitive in a rapidly evolving luxury watch landscape?

We remain intentionally independent and selective. By producing in small quantities and maintaining control over every stage of production, we can guarantee authenticity. Our independence allows us to focus on quality rather than volume — a key factor that keeps Vulcain unique and competitive.

The brand faced challenges during the Quartz Crisis and subsequent relaunches. What key lessons did Vulcain learn from that period?

The Quartz Crisis reminded the entire industry of the true value of mechanical craftsmanship. For Vulcain, it reinforced our belief that authenticity, not fashion, defines longevity. The relaunch periods that followed taught us resilience and the importance of staying true to our DNA, not imitating others, but celebrating what makes Vulcain distinct.

With the renewed global appreciation for mechanical watches, how has this resurgence benefited Vulcain?

The renewed interest in mechanical watchmaking has created the perfect context for Vulcain’s revival. Collectors and enthusiasts now value heritage, authenticity, and craftsmanship more than ever, values that have always defined our brand. This environment allows Vulcain to reconnect with its audience naturally.

Among expansion, innovation, and heritage preservation, which priorities are currently at the heart of Vulcain’s strategy?

All three are essential, but our primary focus is heritage preservation through meaningful innovation. We aim to modernize without distorting the brand’s character. Our goal is sustainable growth, strengthening Vulcain’s position as a respected independent brand with authentic roots.

In today’s digital era, how important are online platforms and social media for connecting Vulcain with new generations of collectors?

They are crucial. The new generation of collectors discovers and engages with brands online. Social media allows us to tell our story directly, without intermediaries, and to share our passion for craftsmanship. It also helps demystify Swiss watchmaking and make it more accessible to younger audiences.

How do you envision Vulcain’s evolution over the next decade in terms of design, technology, and brand presence?

I see Vulcain evolving as a refined yet contemporary manufacturer. We will continue developing in-house movements, explore new materials responsibly, and selectively expand our global presence. Our designs will remain timeless, with subtle modern reinterpretations that respect our history.

Are there plans to introduce new complications or collaborations while maintaining Vulcain’s classic DNA and mechanical identity?

Yes, we are exploring both. We want to remain faithful to Vulcain’s DNA while offering collectors something fresh. This may include limited collaborations with artisans or other independent watchmakers who share our values. However, every project must feel coherent with our mechanical identity.

Sustainability and craftsmanship are increasingly linked in modern horology.

How is Vulcain integrating responsible production and ethical practices into its philosophy?

For us, sustainability means producing fewer, better watches that last for generations. We prioritize local sourcing, long-lasting materials, and repairability. Our small-scale production naturally supports responsible practices we don’t overproduce, and we ensure that every watch is built to endure.

On a personal note which Vulcain model do you wear most often, and what makes it special to you?

I often wear the Cricket Classic from our recent collection. It perfectly embodies Vulcain’s spirit elegant, mechanically fascinating, and historically rich. Each time the alarm sounds, it reminds me of the brand’s ingenuity and the passion that drives our work every day.
