DON'T TRY TO BUILD A BRAND BUILD SOMETHING YOU TRULY BELIEVE IN

Ev Kudoke, Co-Founder and Managing Director of KUDOKE GmbH, discusses the business and personal foundations behind the independent German watchmaking atelier, its approach to sustainable growth, collector relationships and the importance of authenticity.

Ev Kudoke | Co-Founder & Managing Director | KUDOKE GmbH

Ev Kudoke is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of KUDOKE GmbH, where she leads the business behind one of Germany's most respected independent watchmaking ateliers. Holding a degree in Business Administration, she built her career in category management, international sales, and marketing, developing expertise in brand strategy, customer relations, and global business development before joining KUDOKE full-time in 2018.

Although KUDOKE was founded by her husband, Master Watchmaker Stefan Kudoke, Ev has played a pivotal role in shaping the company from its earliest days. While initially supporting the business behind the scenes alongside her own professional career, she eventually made the decision to dedicate herself to KUDOKE full-time—a move that proved instrumental to the brand's international growth.

Today, Ev oversees every aspect of the company's operations beyond watchmaking itself, including business strategy, finance, sales, marketing, communications, logistics, customer service, retail partnerships, and collector relations worldwide. Her leadership allows Stefan to focus entirely on the creative and technical side of watchmaking, creating a partnership that has become one of KUDOKE's greatest strengths.

Together, Ev and Stefan have built KUDOKE into a globally admired independent brand, guided by authenticity, sustainable growth, and a shared commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and meaningful relationships with collectors around the world.

What has been your role in building KUDOKE into an internationally respected independent watch brand?

My role has been to create the environment in which KUDOKE can thrive. While Stefan focuses on designing and making the watches, I take care of everything around them - from strategy and finance to sales, marketing, logistics, and our relationships with retailers and collectors.

Over the years, I have worked to make sure that our values are reflected not only in our watches, but also in the way we communicate, collaborate, and grow as a company. Building an international brand is about much more than selling watches; it is about earning trust and creating lasting relationships.

How do you and Stefan complement each other in managing the business?

I think our greatest strength is that we have very different talents but share the same values and vision.

Stefan is the creative mind behind the watches. His passion is designing, developing, and making timepieces. My passion is building everything around that—from the business and the brand to our relationships with collectors and partners around the world.

We trust each other completely and give each other the freedom to focus on what we do best. Of course, we discuss all important decisions together, but fortunately we both want the same thing: to build KUDOKE in a way that feels authentic, sustainable, and true to who we are.

And because we are husband and wife, KUDOKE is not just our company - it is part of our life and our family. That makes the journey both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

How do you balance global demand with limited production?

For us, growth has never been the goal. Our goal is to build the best watches we can while preserving the quality, craftsmanship, and personal character that define KUDOKE.

We consciously grow step by step, and only when it feels healthy and sustainable. That sometimes means longer waiting times, but it also means we never have to compromise on our values or the quality of our work.

I believe collectors understand and appreciate that. They are not simply buying a watch they are investing in something that has been created with time, care, and genuine human craftsmanship. That is something we will never sacrifice for higher production numbers.

How important is storytelling and brand communication in today's competitive watch industry?

I believe storytelling has become more important than ever—but only if it is authentic.

At KUDOKE, we don't invent stories we simply share what we do every day. We show the people behind the watches, the craftsmanship behind even the smallest components, and the passion that goes into every timepiece. Most importantly, our collectors become part of that story. Every watch begins its life in our workshop, but it continues its journey on the wrist of its owner, creating memories and becoming part of their personal story as well.

How have you seen collectors' expectations evolve?

I think collectors have become much more informed and much more curious. Today, they don't just want to know what a watch is—they want to know who made it, how it was created, and what values stand behind it. They are increasingly looking for authenticity rather than prestige alone.

They also expect a much more personal relationship with a brand. They appreciate meeting the watchmaker, visiting the workshop, and becoming part of the story. I believe this direct connection between maker and collector is one of the greatest strengths of independent watchmaking.

Which markets have shown the strongest appreciation for KUDOKE's philosophy and craftsmanship?

It is difficult to single out one particular market because we have met wonderful collectors all over the world. What they all have in common is an appreciation for authentic craftsmanship and independent watchmaking.

That said, the markets have certainly evolved over the years. From the very beginning, the United States, Japan, and Hong Kong were among our strongest markets. More recently, we have seen exciting growth in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where collectors are becoming increasingly knowledgeable and developing a genuine passion for independent watchmaking.

What is especially encouraging is that this appreciation is no longer limited to a few established markets. Around the world, collectors are becoming more educated and are looking beyond the large luxury brands. They want authenticity, craftsmanship, and a personal connection to the maker. I believe this is one of the most positive developments for independent watchmaking today.

How do you maintain the exclusivity and authenticity of the brand while expanding internationally?

For us, international growth has never meant producing more watches at any cost. It means finding the right partners who share our values and can represent KUDOKE with the same passion and authenticity that we have in our workshop.

We are very selective when choosing retailers. We look for long-term relationships rather than rapid expansion. It is important to us that collectors receive the same personal experience, whether they visit us in Germany or one of our partners around the world.

Most importantly, we never allow growth to compromise who we are. We continue to grow step by step, at a pace that feels healthy and sustainable. Our independence gives us the freedom to make those decisions ourselves, and I believe that is the key to preserving both the exclusivity and the authenticity of KUDOKE.

What qualities do you believe distinguish KUDOKE from other independent watchmakers?

I believe one of the things that truly distinguishes KUDOKE is that the entire creative process—from the first design sketch and the movement concept to the finished watch—is driven by Stefan. He combines design, engineering, and craftsmanship in one person, giving every KUDOKE watch a very distinctive signature. Many watchmakers are exceptional engineers or craftsmen, but not all combine technical expertise with such a personal design language.

Another important aspect is that KUDOKE is truly a family business. Stefan and I have built the company together, each contributing our own strengths while sharing the same values and long-term vision. I believe collectors can feel that personal commitment—not only in our watches, but also in every interaction they have with us.

Ultimately, we don't try to be different for the sake of being different. We simply stay true to ourselves, and I think that authenticity is what distinguishes KUDOKE.

What are your long-term ambitions for KUDOKE over the next five to ten years?

I don't think in terms of five- or ten-year plans. Watchmaking has taught me that some of the best ideas cannot be scheduled.

My ambition is simply that, ten years from now, every KUDOKE watch still carries the same soul it does today. That we continue to surprise collectors, remain curious, and never lose the courage to create something unexpected.

If, one day, someone picks up a KUDOKE and can immediately feel that it was created by hand, with patience, passion, and genuine dedication, then I believe we are on the right path. Everything else is just numbers.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who aspire to build a niche luxury brand in today's global marketplace?

Don't try to build a brand - build something you truly believe in.

Be prepared to work hard. Success never comes by itself, even if it sometimes looks that way from the outside. Building a niche luxury brand takes years of dedication, persistence, and countless small decisions made consistently over time.

Today, it is easy to believe that a few successful social media posts can build a brand. They can create attention, but they cannot create trust. Trust is earned through reliability, quality, and consistently delivering on your promises - year after year.

Most importantly, stay authentic and surround yourself with people who complement your strengths and share your values. No successful brand is built by one person alone. In our case, KUDOKE has grown because Stefan and I each focus on what we do best while always working towards the same goal.

If collectors believe in you and your values, they will stay with you for the long term. In the end, authenticity, patience, and consistency are far more valuable than short-term success.

Finally, what message would you like to share with the readers of Watch Circle Magazine and the global watch community?

Thank you for your interest in independent watchmaking and in KUDOKE.

Without the passion, trust, and support of collectors around the world, brands like ours simply would not exist. Your appreciation allows us to live our dream every day to create watches by hand, remain independent, and stay true to our values.

Thank you for being part of our journey.
