Mühle-Glashütte GmbH is an independent German watch manufacturer based in Glashütte, Saxony, with a family watchmaking and precision-engineering tradition dating back to 1869. The company is particularly recognized for robust, highly legible mechanical watches inspired by its heritage in nautical instruments, marine chronometers, and precision measuring equipment.
The family's original business was founded by Robert Mühle in 1869. After decades of political upheaval and nationalization in East Germany, Hans-Jürgen Mühle re-established the family business in 1994 as Mühle-Glashütte GmbH nautische Instrumente und Feinmechanik. The company initially returned to producing marine chronometers and ship's clocks before entering wristwatch production in the mid-1990s.
Today, Mühle-Glashütte combines traditional Glashütte watchmaking with its strong functional and nautical identity. Its watches are known for precision, reliability, excellent legibility, and distinctive technical features such as the Woodpecker Neck fine adjustment.
For the modern Mühle-Glashütte GmbH, the key figure is Hans-Jürgen Mühle, who re-established the family business on April 1, 1994, following German reunification. He began with two employees and developed a new quartz marine chronometer before expanding into wristwatches.
Robert Mühle's legacy is still central to the company. Mühle-Glashütte describes its history as spanning more than 155 years, with precision measurement remaining the connecting thread between its original instruments and modern mechanical watches.
Thilo Mühle, representing the fifth generation of the family, has led Mühle-Glashütte since 2007. He initially joined the company in product development and later shared management responsibilities with his father before becoming the company's sole managing director in 2007.
Under Thilo's leadership, Mühle-Glashütte has developed into an internationally respected German watch manufacturer while maintaining its family ownership and Glashütte production. In 2024, his children, Fanny and Dustin Mühle, officially joined the company's management, forming a new leadership trio, while Thilo retained overall responsibility.
