Girard-Perregaux is one of Switzerland's historic haute horlogerie manufactures, tracing its origins to 1791, when Geneva watchmaker Jean-François Bautte established his own company. The modern Girard-Perregaux name emerged in the 19th century through the union of Constant Girard and Marie Perregaux, while Constant Girard's pioneering work established the brand's enduring reputation for combining mechanical ingenuity with distinctive design. Its legendary Tourbillon with Three Bridges, first presented in 1867, transformed functional movement architecture into an aesthetic signature. The manufacture later pioneered high-frequency mechanical movements and helped establish the 32,768 Hz quartz frequency that became the industry standard. Today, collections including Laureato, Bridges, 1966, Vintage 1945 and Cat's Eye sit alongside highly complicated creations. Girard-Perregaux remains an independent Swiss manufacture with extensive in-house movement expertise.
Jean-François Bautte (1772–1837) was a Geneva watchmaker, jeweller, goldsmith and entrepreneur whose company forms the earliest foundation of today's Girard-Perregaux. Beginning his apprenticeship at just 12, Bautte mastered multiple crafts before establishing his own company in 1791. His vision was unusually integrated for its time: he brought watchmaking, engraving, jewellery and related crafts together under one roof, effectively creating an early form of manufacture. Bautte became known for extremely thin watches and imaginative objects including miniature watches, jewellery and novelty timepieces. Although the Girard-Perregaux name came later through Constant Girard and Marie Perregaux, the maison itself traces its heritage to Bautte's 1791 enterprise and explicitly recognizes him as the foundational figure in its history.
Patrick Pruniaux is the current Chief Executive Officer of Girard-Perregaux and Chairman & CEO of its parent Sowind Group. He joined the watch industry after senior commercial roles at TAG Heuer, followed by a period at Apple, where he was involved in developing the Apple Watch business in Europe. He joined Sowind in 2017 as CEO of Ulysse Nardin and became CEO of Girard-Perregaux in 2018. Following the brands' acquisition from Kering by a group of private investors in 2022, Pruniaux became a key figure in their return to independent ownership. His strategy emphasizes long-term brand building, technical expertise, selective distribution and preserving Girard-Perregaux's identity as a manufacture. The brand's current press room identifies him as Chief Executive Officer, alongside Managing Director Marc Michel-Amadry.
